UV-Fashions Introduces the Australian Method

In 2010, Jan Willem van der Sterre introduced the Australian method in the Netherlands. What is the Australian method you might ask? Australia is 'light years' ahead of the Netherlands and Europe when it comes to safe and responsible sun behavior. In Australia, the sun often shines intensely. In the Netherlands, a sun strength of seven to eight is already considered 'high'. How different it is in Australia! There, sun strengths of fourteen or fifteen are regularly reached. This high sun strength logically corresponds with a high UV content. This fact ensures that the number of people affected by melanoma (skin cancer) is also high. Naturally, the combination of high sun strength with fair skin also plays a role. The 'Australian' often descends from the British, and typically has fair skin with little pigment. Australians also relatively often use tanning beds and due to the warm and sunny conditions, life takes place much more outdoors than here in the Netherlands and Europe. 

First UV Clothes, Then Apply Sunscreen

The high sun strength, the number of people with melanomas, and their light skin have led to the development over the years of an 'ideal way' to arm against the sun and the harmful effects of UV rays: the Australian method. In short, the Australian method involves: Ensuring that as much of your body as possible is covered with UV-protective (swim)clothing. This can range from a UV sun hat to a UV shirt and from a UV protective longsleeve to a UV-protective pants. It's not always feasible to cover your entire body with UV clothing. As a supplement to wearing UV clothing, applying sunscreen to uncovered body parts (for example, neck, hands, lower legs, feet) is a necessary addition. Apply sunscreen to uncovered body parts at least every two hours with a sunscreen that offers at least SPF 30, but preferably SPF 50. In short: Wear UV-protected clothing, and apply sunscreen to areas that aren’t covered, at least every 2 hours with a sunscreen offering the highest possible protection factor.

Exposure to UVA is responsible for skin aging, while UVB causes burning. Unlike many sunscreens, UV clothing protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. The optimal way of protection is to combine the best of both worlds. UV Clothing is the base, and applying sunscreen to uncovered body parts complements this. The Dutch Cancer Society, Skin Fund, Dutch Association of Dermatology, Melanoma Foundation, Dermatologist Drs. Leenarts, Nivea, Eucerin, and Vision endorse this message. Thus, we communicate and advise with a unified stance. When the skin burns at a young age, it increases the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. By wearing UV clothing and UV swimwear, you reduce the risk that you or your children will come into contact with this serious skin condition.
